Activities

Hiking

Smiling Hills is located right on the Nakusp - New Denver Rail Trail, leave your vehicle here and walk from the Cabin 4.5km to Slocan Lake. Or take a drive to one of the many trails near by

Fishing, canoeing and boating

Launch your canoe, paddle board or boat onto Slocan Lake at our local beach on Bonanza Creek road.

Or fish Summit lake just 10km drive north on highway 6.... We hear there are plenty of bites to be had!

Mountain Biking

Whether you’re a downhill ninja or just want to ride easy, there is something for everyone. Idaho Peak boasts some pretty rad terrain with other trails in Rosebery, New Denver and Box Lake.

Relaxation

Maybe you just need a break from your busy life? Take time to read a book, lay back in the hammock and enjoy the views. Or on a cold night snuggle up by the pellet stove.

Ski - cross country, back country or downhill

Ski cross country right from the door down to the groomed rail trail. Head up to Summit Lake ski area for a mini downhill adventure or pack your gear and head out for the day into the backcountry.

Hotsprings

Located north of us are Halcyon Hotsprings, Nakusp Hotsprings, St Leon and Halfway Hotsprings and to the south Ainsworth Hotspring. All can be a beautiful day out or an evening trip to relax after a day of adventures.

Museums

Did you know that just a 20 minute drive from us is the ghost town of Sandon? Famous for its mining history dating back to 1898! Maybe you can’t find some of the 10,000 missing coins lost in the flood of 1955...

Or investigate the museum in Nakusp, learn about the ferry’s and local industry.

Shopping

During the summer months New Denver has a local craft & produce market on Friday morning and Nakusp has one on Saturdays.

Sports store Valhalla Pure in New Denver has a rental section for paddle boards and canoes so if you didn’t bring your own no problem, they also sell all the latest sports equipment for your adventure.

Both towns have grocery stores and other locally owned stores selling clothes, local produce and artwork.

Eating out

We are a 20 minute drive to Nakusp where you can sit in the beer garden of The Leland Pub overlooking Arrow Lake. Or grab poutine to go from The Hut and wander down to the beautiful water front gardens.

There are cafes and sandwich shops in New Denver also, but check opening times as some of them are seasonal.

One for the benefits of staying with us at Smiling Hills is that you have your own full kitchen so why not cook up a tasty meal or make sandwiches at home before you head out?
